Altitude Test Chambers

General Description

An Altitude Test Chamber (ATC) is used to train aviators to deal with the effects of rapid decompression experienced during aircraft emergencies. The ATC comprises a horizontal, cylindrical vessel with two-compartments, accommodating a number of trainees plus instructors in the main compartment and as well as in the observer compartment. The chamber is fitted with two internal doors, thus allowing the ATC to be taken to altitude as a whole or with either compartment at varying altitudes.

Inside ChamberRapid decompression is simulated through the opening of a large vacuum reservoir vessel, and can be performed in either the large or the small compartment. The process commences when a large high-speed pneumatically actuated valve is opened and the air in the ATC is drawn into the vacuum reservoir through a controllable orifice valve, which controls the speed of the rapid decompression.

PanelEach chamber compartment is fitted with environmental conditioning, which will maintain steady conditions at any altitude.

Vacuum pumps are provided for both normal and standby service during normal ascents, an air compressor supplies instrument quality air for the pneumatically operated control valves and breathing quality air for the BIBS and Pressurized Training Suits.

The ATC control system comprises a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and user interface SCADA software on a PC station, designed and programmed to meet the full operational requirements of the client. Extensive audit trails and record keeping facilities are included.
